(888) FLA-XRAY (24 hour)
In 1978, the Legislature authorized the department to certify people who operate x-ray machines or who otherwise use radiation on people for medical reasons. Today there are over 23,000 active professionals certified in one of four main categories: Basic X-Ray Machine Operator, General Radiographer, Nuclear Medicine Technologist, and Radiation Therapy Technologist.

To become certified, each applicant must pass a test typically covering radiation protection, equipment operation and maintenance, image production and evaluation, procedures, and patient care. Each certificate is valid for 2 years during which the technologist must obtain 12 hours of continuing education. The department evaluates each continuing education course and furnishes a list of approved course providers to each technologist.

Department inspectors verify the certification of each technologist during the inspection of medical x-ray machines, nuclear medicine facilities and radiation therapy facilities.
