In certain locations of Florida, leaking underground
storage tanks, industrial operations and spills, and over-use of
pesticides (such as ethylene dibromide, [EDB]) have caused organic
chemical compounds and toxic metals such as cadmium and chromium to
leach into groundwater.
These areas are identified by the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The contaminants in these areas present a variety of
health risks. DEP is responsible for mandating cleanup actions and
advising residents in contaminated areas when additional testing of
their water is needed and if other precautions or remediations are
