Sarasota County PACE EH
Third Quarter
Progress Report
The North Sarasota County Community Action Coalition continues to
meet to discuss issues and solutions the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each
month. Only one meeting was cancelled due to hurricane concerns.
Attendance is still strong, averaging 30 or more participants per
meeting. The majority of participants are African American, reflecting
the demographics of North Sarasota. So far the community has
discussed:
Code Enforcement
Lighting
Flooding and Drainage
Beautification and Cleanup
Streets and Sidewalks
Safety
Law Enforcement
Landlords
Water and Sewer connection
Sites of potential environmental contamination that were identified
at an earlier meeting have been sampled and are in the final stages of
analysis. Results are expected within the next week from the private
laboratory contracted to do the analysis. The disposable cameras
purchased for the community have not been returned as of yet.
The community is very concerned with the perception that some people
just dont care where they dump waste and are simply too cheap to take
material to the dump, especially tires. The County has posted no
dumping signs at the locations identified as areas of concern for
dumping, but this appears to be an ongoing battle. Law enforcement is
willing to work with the community to pursue any leads, but the
community must be willing to provide those leads.
One Community Clean Up day has been held and a significant amount of
junk was collected and disposed of. Unfortunately, winds from the
storms have knocked down branches in the community and these are still
not completely cleaned up. We will work with Sarasota County Public
Works to schedule another clean up day during the coming quarter.
A presentation is scheduled before the Board of County Commissioners
in early 2005 to discuss the findings and needs of the community.
