HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
October PACE EH Update

Date:     Nov. 1, 2004

To:         Daniel Parker, MSP, GAL

From:     Alexandra Fitos, MA
                PACE EH Coordinator

Subject:  PACE EH Grant Update for Palm River, October 2004.

This was our fourth PACE meeting. The meeting that was planned for September was cancelled due to storm activity. We had the smallest crowd yet with just six team members in attendance. This was due to land use hearing in which several team members were actively challenging a large-scale development from moving into an area that was already stressed or lacking infrastructure.

Regardless of our small group we had a productive discussion on a brownfields grant that Mary Yeargan from the EPC (Environmental Protection Commission) brought forth for community input. Residents showed a lot of interest in the brownfields program and gave Mary some areas to look for potential contamination in Palm River. Mary stated that she would look into those areas that residents mentioned and give an up-date at a later time.

Additionally, the team was informed that the survey was being extended to the end on October to insure the best response rate from residents. At meeting time we had about 90 surveys returned out of 350 distributed. Surveys will be enter into an access database and top five issues will be addressed by the PACE process. Those who still had surveys were asked to return them as soon as possible.

The final discussion for the evening was our group discussion on “defining results of the PACE EH Process.” The main objective behind this discussion was to see what suggestions and ideas the team had for the last part of the project. Some thoughts from the group were to try and get other community associations together and include them in the action planning stage of the protocol. The only problem with this is how fragmented the community is and cooperation may be hard to come by depending on who is at the table. Our next meeting is on November 8, 2004 where we will discuss the final results of the survey and a decision as to what issues will be addressed in the action planning stage.
