ORANGE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
PACE-EH Update
Submitted by Alberto Brioso
This morning at 10:00 a.m. I will be meeting
with Susan Harris, Assistant Director in the Office of Neighborhood
Affairs, to gather information on local neighborhood associations.
I will focus on associations in the targeted zip codes, but this
general list will be good information for our office to have for
future use.
While I am in City Hall, I will go by the Commissioners'
office to gather information on any upcoming meetings that they
will be involved in.
Andrea Hartsog from Walton County is sending me the presentation
she used to present the PACE-EH program at the County Commissioners
meeting. I will keep you posted.
Mrs. Harris shared very valuable information
with me that will help in the PACE-EH process as well as ongoing
community outreach and contacts. She supplied me with a list of
local neighborhood associations and their contacts. She also would
like to begin working with the Health Department and be a partner
in the PACE-EH process with Environmental Health. She gave me a
contact at the Healthy Community Initiative program - Ray Larsen.
I shared the zip code information with Mrs. Harris,
and she was surprised that the 32805 zip code was not one of the
targeted areas for high asthma prevalence. I was also surprised
from the very beginning since a high percentage of lead poison prevention
cases I have investigated in this area have had at least one child
at the residence that suffers from asthma-like complications. Her
information on this area came from data compiled by Healthy Community
Initiative, and also from meetings such as the one being held on
the 23rd of June at City Hall addressing community issues in the
Parramore area.
We speculated that this area specifically around
the Parramore area does not seek or have access to the appropriate
medical facilities. This area appears to be one that is in need
of Environmental Health intervention.
This meeting appears to be one that will serve
a great benefit if the Health Department is present.
A meeting has been scheduled at Orlando City
Hall on June 23rd for the Parramore community. I will be present
to promote the PACE-EH process and share information with the attendees.
I am also scheduled to meet with Reverend Frank
Massey next week to begin setting up community meetings in West
Orlando.
A general CFAC meeting was held on June 14 and
collaboration is being made to make the education committee a larger
part of the PACE-EH process through asthma education in the schools
and then extending the outreach to the children's homes.
Yesterday, I was on Reverend Frank Masse's radio
station. I spoke about the Lead Poison Prevention Program and the
service that Environmental Health offers to families with small
children who are concerned about lead poisoning. I will be meeting
with him this week or at the latest next week to meet other community
leaders in the area that he works with on a regular basis. The next
radio broadcast I will conduct with him will be pertaining to general
Environmental Health issues. Please let me know if there is anything
you would want me to bring up. The same applies to Marisol's Spanish
radio station.
