MARTIN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
June/July, 2005 PACE EH Report

To:              Daniel Parker, MSP, GAL
Assistant Division Director, Division of Environmental Health

From:         Wendy Roberts, PACE EH Coordinator

Date:          August, 2005

Subject:     June/July PACE EH Update

We had only one meeting in the month of June as the first meeting had to be canceled at the last moment because the church was not available. The meeting was held on June 20, 2005. Only five members were in attendance.

Lisa Wichser, Transportation Administrator/Traffic Engineer attended the meeting to provide the team with information on the following issues: traffic calming options for the Pettway Street, how to reduce the speed limit on A1A from 45 to 35 MPH, getting caution signs on Pettway St. to alert drivers to hidden driveways and the bus stop, and lastly the process to change to the spelling of a street name sign changed. Some of the options she mentioned in regards to traffic calming; to install islands with landscaping, landscape the sides of the road to give the appearance of a narrower road, install speed tables (speed bumps), and install raised intersections. In order for a change to occur, a written petition is needed from the majority of the people affected requesting a traffic study on Pettway and it would need to include recommendations for traffic calming and cautions signs. County traffic engineers would conduct a study for one week on the number of cars using Pettway Street and their speed. The county’s traffic engineers use the data to create a priority list for all funding projects that is submitted to the Board of County Commissioners for approval. If the project is not funded by the county commissioners, the District Commissioner can allocate funds from the districts budget. The estimated cost is between $3,000 -$ 5,000. A petition has been created for this issue and the residents will submit it at the August 22, 2005 meeting (see attachment.)

A written petition is also needed from the majority of people in the affect area requesting to change the street name London back to Lundy. The team decided to have a petition created for this issue (See attachment.)

Lisa plans to research when and why the speed limit was raised on A1A. She doesn’t think that the team would be successful in getting the limited reduced from 45mph to 35 mph.

Bob had the idea of creating a community sign for Gomez. The team members were given a picture of a community sign in Banner Lake to be used as an example for creating a sketch of a sign for Gomez. The team’s assignment is to submit their sketch at the August 22, 2005 meeting, and decide on how many signs they want to have constructed.

It was decided to suspend meeting for the summer and resume meetings starting on August 22, 2005.
