Subject:     March PACE EH Update

We had two meetings during the month of March. The first meeting of the month was held on Monday, March 14, 2005. A total of ten residents were in attendance. During this meeting we finished the analysis of the remaining environmental health issues that had not been addressed at the last meeting. These were the issues that we addressed: Lack of bathroom facility in park, street lights, standing debris was combined with bad habits, noise, crime, street names & street signs, electrical lines, phone lines, after storm recovery and lastly, vacant/condemned houses. All of the issues have been typed into a chart format and will be given to the residents in order to rank and prioritize the issues. (See this MSWord documentopens in new window.)

The second meeting of the month was held on Monday, March 28, 2005. A total of seven residents were in attendance, a lower turn out than our previous meetings. The team was called to remind them of the meeting.

Our objective for this meeting was to rank and prioritize the seventeen environmental health issues facing the community. The chart of the issues was distributed to the team, they were told to look at each individual issue and look specifically at the last column which is, “what could happen if the problem is not fixed?” They were told the rank each issue on a scale of 1 being the most important, 2- less important 3- not as important. The results were written on chart paper and tallied. The issue that scored the most ones is, lack of fire hydrants (7), followed by well water (6), speeding (5) and these issues scored four ones: bad habits, phone lines, after storm recovery, and condemned houses.

A discussion was held about the four issues that scored a four. We discussed the issue of “Bad Habits,” it became clear that it is an underlying cause of the other issues of garbage cans without lids, and yard cuttings. Both of those issues did not score high, thus it will not be a top issue. Sheila suggested the team take the inventive to do a community clean-up to address the issue. The phone lines issue as it turns out is an isolated issue only facing one individual; this issue will not be addressed at this time. The after storm recovery is not going to be addressed as we can’t really do anything until a storm occurs. Through the discussion and the results of the scoring it became clear these are the top for issues to be addressed:

1. Lack of Fire Hydrants
2. Well Water
3. Speeding
4. Condemned Houses

After reviewing the four issues, the team discussed what could be done to address each issue. In regards to issue lack of fire hydrants, there needs to be enough to have access for everyone in the community. The issue of speeding, post speed on A1A, and change it from 45 to 35 mph. Traffic calming areas for Pettway Street and Washington Street. The well water issue, sample drinking water to make sure it meets the standards. The last issue condemned houses, a remedy for it would be to bring the house(s) up to code or demolish the house(s).

At our next meeting, on Monday, April 11, 2005, we will develop an action plan for the four issues. Julianne Renk, from Indian River County, will be attending the meeting to share her successes in Wabasso.
