Subject: Suwannee and Lafayette County PACE-EH Projects, Third Quarter Report

Progress Summary
During the third quarter, the Suwannee County Community Environmental Health Assessment Team successfully completed the survey instrument to be used for assessment. On August 3, 2004 the PACE-EH Project participated in a health fair for school district employees. We were able to share information concerning the project and administer our newly designed survey to more than three hundred school employees. We emphasized the need for increased awareness in classrooms on environmental health issues. On August 5, 2004 our group had an information table at three School Open House events where we administered our survey and distributed information about the PACE-EH project. At both events, the public was very receptive of the concept and many expressed genuine appreciation for the opportunity to share their perceptions of environmental health in the community. Our direct mail out of the PACE-EH survey is scheduled for late September.

In Lafayette County, the PACE-EH Project participated in an outreach effort at the community’s only grocery store on July 31, 2004. More than fifty residents were given information concerning the PACE-EH project. On August 9, 2004 the PACE-EH project had a similar display at Lafayette High School’s Open House event. This type of outreach effort has been effective in conveying the purpose of the PACE-EH project to the Lafayette County community. The overall perception of the project has improved dramatically as the result of these efforts. In September, we will collaborate with a local faith-based group to conduct a large-scale outreach project with the Hispanic American population of Lafayette County. More than one thousand residents are expected to attend this event. Our direct mail of the survey to all residents of Mayo is scheduled for October.

Progress/Success:
Suwannee County and the Wellborn community continue to display a positive perception of the PACE-EH project. The outreach efforts we have conducted recently have reinforced this positive perception and we have gotten meaningful feedback as a direct result of these efforts. In Lafayette County the community’s perception of the project has improved significantly. As with Suwannee County, the outreach efforts conducted have allowed us to speak to community residents in an informal manner. This is particularly helpful in small, rural counties. We have secured a pledge of technical assistance from Suwannee River Area Health Education Consortium, who has offered to convert our survey instrument to a format which can be scanned. They have agreed to furnish us with the tabulated results from these surveys in both counties.
