Subject: Suwannee County PACE EH Project, Second Quarter Report

Progress Summary

During the second quarter, the Suwannee County Community Environmental Health Assessment Team met three times and has made significant progress on tasks 2 and 5. Three out of four sub-committees have completed their work on Task 2 “Defining the Community.” The subcommittee assigned to gather information on the history and culture of the community of Wellborn has compiled a thirteen page report on their portion of the Community Profile. Other subcommittees have provided significant detail, as well. The end product of the Wellborn Community Profile will be a well-researched report which should prove valuable to residents, grant writers, and community planners. At their May meeting, the PACE-EH team decided to put in additional hours in order to finalize the survey (Task 5) to be administered in the community. The group used the example given in PACE EH in Practice from the Delaware, OH’s PACE-EH project. Using this basic design, with a few structural changes, the group designed a survey with issues pertinent to the Wellborn community. We began administering the survey on June 5, 2004 at a local community festival (Wellborn Blueberry Festival). Thirty-seven community residents took time out of the activities to complete the survey. The group plans to do a direct mail out of the survey beginning the second week of September. In addition to the direct mail, survey pick up/drop off points will be established at several locations within the community. The Suwannee PACE-EH team prepared a press release to run before the first administration of the survey on June 5th. Two more press releases will run before the direct mail of the survey in September. In addition to this, the PACE-EH Project Coordinator will be conducting a presentation and focus group with the Wellborn Community Association in August.

Timeline of Tasks Completed:
Task 1 – Completed in December 2003
Task 2 – Completed in March 2004
Task 3 – Ongoing, initial steering committee formed in January 2004
Task 4 – Ongoing, initial goals and objectives defined in December 2003
Task 5 – Ongoing, survey instrument completed in June 2004.

.Progress/Success:

The Suwannee PACE-EH team has truly embraced the concept and philosophy of PACE-EH. They enjoyed the hands-on activities in Task 2, in which they were active participants in gathering and compiling information. Task 5 was equally engaging for this group and they surprised me by asking for additional meeting time to complete this task. The Wellborn community seems very excited about this project. At the Wellborn Blueberry Festival where the first surveys were administered, we received a very positive response from community residents. Many were inquisitive, but we received no negative feedback. The residents are very friendly and are eager to discuss problems and issues facing their community. The press release which ran the first week of June was extremely helpful. We were given a front page, color spot. Several residents have called to express their willingness to help with the project.

Progress Summary

During the second quarter, the Lafayette Community Assessment Team has met three times. We have made significant progress with Task 2 – “Defining the Community” and are currently working on completing a community profile. The group has moved ahead to Task 5 to begin working on a survey instrument to be administered. Using several examples from PACE-EH in Practice, the group has been working on instrument design and has begun the process of selecting the issues to be on the survey. Due to nearly all members having summer vacation plans in July, the group has decided to meet again in August. At this meeting, we will finalize the issues to be on the survey and will begin plans for implementation.

Progress/Success:

Attendance has not been as good this quarter. This is largely due to election year activities – three of the nine members are running for re-election and face significant challengers. I have conducted a presentation and focus group with one community faith-based group and am scheduled to conduct a similar activity with a second group in August. These presentations are crucial to getting community support and will increase survey participation. Most community members are receptive to the PACE-EH Project, but there continues to be an element of concern. It essential to continue one-on-one and group meetings with community residents in order to clarify the projects goals and objectives.
