PACE EH Coordinator
Subject:
Gadsden County Environmental Health Community Project Monthly
Progress Report
On Monday September 26, 2005, we held our eighth PACE EH meeting at
the Gadsden County Public Library in Quincy. At this months meeting we
discussed Trash Burning in the rural areas, and Toxic Waste (solid and
hazardous waste). The PACE Coordinator and Team Members continue to
focus on our environmental health community project, as well as
additional ways of educating the communities and residents of
environmental health issues in the county.
Guess speakers at this months meeting were Michael X. Redig,
Environmental Manager- Hazardous Waste Regulation Section with the
Department of Environmental Protection, and Elliott Shawn Duggar, with
the Division of Forestry. Gerald Freeman with Gadsden County Waste
Management was unable to attend the meeting due to a budget meeting.
Mr. Redig provided the group with handouts, and presented a slide
presentation regarding hazardous waste from homes, what kinds of wastes
are considered to be hazardous, what do we mean when we say a waste is
toxic. Discussion was also focused on pesticides, acids, and bases in
and outside of the home, and what to do with some commons household
hazardous wastes. He also enlightened the group about various types of
explosive chemicals often found in old farm sheds, and he gave tips on
what to do if they came upon old dormat shed containing chemicals, old
paint or oil. The group was especially interested in this information
being provided to the schools to educate the children of the danger of
toxic materials in and outside of the home. Mr. Redig provided the group
with the name and number of a contact person that would be able to speak
to the schools or provide the information for the schools to present.
Elliott Duggar, with the Division of Forestry discussed the duties
and responsibilities of his division. He also provided the group with
handouts and discussed the rules and regulations regarding Burning
Trash, and what you need to know. He educated the group on obtaining
permits prior to burning trash, notice of violation and fines imposed
after warning for illegal burning of trash. The group was able to ask
questions and gain information that could be of use to them in the
future. Mr. Duggar provided the group with the telephone number of a
contact person who could assist them with additional questions regarding
burning trash and other services. According to Mr. Duggar, the Division
of Forestry has a Youth Academy, called Forestry Youth Academy for
troubled teenager. The group asked questions and obtained information
regarding the youth academy.
There were ten people that attended the September 26, PACE-EH
meeting, including Chairperson, Bill Keyser, and Vice-chairperson,
Sharon Saulter. The meeting started at 6 p.m. and ended at 8 p.m. The
PACE EH Coordinator continues to look for additional ways in bringing
the attendance up for future meetings, so that the residents of this
county are made more aware of environmental health issues in Gadsden
County.
The PACE-EH Coordinator continues to post all up coming meetings in
the three local Gadsden County Newspapers (Twin City News, Gadsden
County Times and Havana Herald). Flyers are posted throughout the City
of Quincy, Midway, Chattahoochee, and Havana areas.
Topic of discussion for next months meeting will be Septic Tanks.
