CBRNE Surveillance
The CBRNE Program represents the natural evolution to another
facet of environmental public health surveillance. It serves to bridge the gap
between environmental exposure response and preparedness by providing syndromic
surveillance to facilitate timely notification of emerging CBRNE-related events
to facilitate judicious decision making and prompt action. Electronic
Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics
(ESSENCE) and the Florida Poison Information Center Network (FPICN) serve as the
programs primary syndromic surveillance systems. State Warning Point (SWP)
alerts and news releases provide additional near real-time CBRNE event
surveillance information. Event notification reports from the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission are also integrated to build the CBRNE surveillance picture. The
CBRNE program offers collaborative support to the Bureau of Radiation Control
and the Bureau of Epidemiology by providing environmentally-related
epidemiological expertise for radiological and biological responses.
