PROGRAM PURPOSE
The internship program was created to afford undergraduate minority students
an opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience and promote
their participation in the environmental health field. This position will also
provide the participant the opportunity to enhance their job experience, develop
or increase responsibility, and the flexibility to change or solidify their
current career path in environmental health. Participating in this internship
can influence how fast and how far minority students advance in the
environmental and public health fields.
In addition, many past participants that have successfully participated in the
internship program, have gone on to work in the environmental health field, been
hired by a local county health department, or went on to obtain a Master's
Degree in Public Health (MPH).
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program will provide opportunities for the student to develop various
interests, knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to transition into a
full-time career in public health. The Bureau of Community Environmental Health
accomplishes this by dividing the internship into two (2) phases and locations.
The chart below illustrates the different duties given at each location as well
as the duration spent in each phase of the internship.

| DUTIES:
- Daily program management assignments
- Occasional field inspections
- Occasional survey inspections
- Required to work up from 10 to 20 hours per week

- Perform inspections
- Receive training in various Environmental Health programs
- Required to work 40 hours per week
- Participates in administrative aspects of statewide program management,
such as subject matter research, and providing public education
- Creating educational materials or brochures

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
In order to apply, the applicant must meet each of the following requirements:
- Ethnic minority
- Undergraduate student at an accredited university or college
- United States citizen or permanent resident of the United States and its
possessions
- Junior or senior majoring in physical or natural sciences
- Minimum 2.5 GPA
- Able to work outdoors
- Valid drivers license
- Reliable vehicle
- Lift minimum of 30 pounds
HOW TO APPLY
We typically interview in mid of April each year. To apply for the program, it
is best to submit your application by April 1st. However, we will accept
applications at any point and hold them for the next available hiring
opportunity. Occasionally we have an unexpected vacancy that is not in the
spring. Feel free to apply using the guidance below.
In order to be granted an interview, one must submit a complete application.
A complete application consists of:

- One page essay addressing the question, "What are your expectations of
this Internship?"
- Letter of recommendation (1) from school faculty or advisor.
- A copy of their official school transcript showing current grade point
average and college courses listed. An unofficial copy may be provided when
making initial application. However, if called for an interview an official
copy must be provided within five business days of the scheduled interview.
