Health Assessments by the Florida Department of Health
We conduct Public Health Assessments (or PHA), which is a comprehensive report reviewing chemicals found in environmental samples of air, soil and water and any potential for harm to human health.
We look at each chemical found at a hazardous waste site and its known health effects. Some chemicals are toxic in small amounts, while other common chemicals can be toxic in large amounts. A PHA also looks to see if there is a way for the chemicals to reach people (exposure pathway). These reports determine if a chemical (or chemicals) at a site poses a health risk or not. During this process we update the community on our activities and new information through newsletters and community meetings. If we find a current health threat, we inform the community immediately. Otherwise, we draft a PHA and ask for community input, usually at a public meeting. We rely on people living near a site to tell us their health concerns. We address these concerns in the final PHA.
